Varatie School is a school in the municipality of Janakkala, which operates in conjunction with the Varatie Child Protection Institution’s Special Unit. The Child Protection Unit accommodates youths aged 11-17 who have neuropsychiatric symptoms/diagnoses, severe child psychiatric symptoms, developmental delays, or mild intellectual disabilities. Significant challenges in attending school can also be a reason for placement.

Varatie School has two small classes, each with a special education teacher, a class-specific teaching assistant, and the necessary personal aides for the students. The students at the school are in need of special support (HOJKS), and the education is not tied to specific grade levels.

At Varatie, the teaching and educational work is based on team thinking, good knowledge of the students, and close collaboration among the department’s management, personal mentors, homes, social workers, and possibly the attending physician. A safe and predictable daily routine, boundaries, familiar adults, and an appropriate level of demand are essential for the young person’s rehabilitation. Our activities are guided by a strong interactive perspective and genuine engagement with the student. We help the student recognize their strengths and thereby empower them as a learner.

Our goal is that every student at Varatie School receives a comprehensive education certificate and finds the best possible secondary education placement for themselves.
