The Elderly and Disabled Council is a statutory and permanent influencing body operating in the municipality, consisting of organizations for retirees, disabled people, and those with long-term illnesses, as well as other entities working with the elderly, disabled, and long-term ill. The activities are based on the Elderly Law (law on supporting the functional capacity of the aging population and social and health services for the elderly), the Disability Services Act, and the Municipal Act.

The tasks of the Elderly and Disabled Council are:

  • To promote cooperation between the municipality and various elderly and disability organizations, to facilitate the participation of the elderly, disabled, and other special groups, and to influence municipal decision-making
  • To promote equality for the elderly and disabled and to prevent discrimination
  • To make proposals and initiatives and provide statements to municipal sectors on issues concerning the elderly and disabled
  • To strive to influence the planning and implementation of the environment and accessibility so that public spaces are suitable for the needs of the elderly, disabled, and sick
  • To strive to promote the ability of the elderly and disabled to cope in everyday life, as well as well-being, health promotion, and leisure activities
  • To represent municipal councils in welfare area councils

The term of the Elderly and Disabled Council lasts until May 31, 2025
