Important groundwater areas are classified into three categories:

• 1-luokka: Vedenhankintaa varten tärkeä pohjavesialue, jonka vettä käytetään tai on tarkoitus käyttää yhdyskunnan vedenhankintaan taikka talousvetenä enemmän kuin keskimäärin 10 kuutiometriä vuorokaudessa tai yli viidenkymmenen ihmisen tarpeisiin.
• 2-luokka: Muu kuin vedenhankintakäytössä oleva pohjavesialue, joka pohjaveden antoisuuden ja muiden ominaisuuksiensa perusteella soveltuu 1 kohdassa tarkoitettuun käyttöön.
• E-luokka: Pohjavesialue, jonka pohjavedestä pintavesi- tai maaekosysteemi on suoraan riippuvainen.

According to Section 17 of the Environmental Protection Act, substances, energy, or microorganisms must not be placed, released, or directed to a location or treated in such a way that:

• tärkeällä tai muulla vedenhankintakäyttöön soveltuvalla pohjavesialueella pohjaveden laadun muutos voi aiheuttaa vaaraa tai haittaa terveydelle tai ympäristölle taikka pohjaveden laatu voi muutoin olennaisesti huonontua;
• toisen kiinteistöllä olevan pohjaveden laadun muutos voi aiheuttaa vaaraa tai haittaa terveydelle tai ympäristölle taikka tehdä pohjaveden kelpaamattomaksi tarkoitukseen, johon sitä voitaisiin käyttää; tai
• toimenpide vaikuttamalla pohjaveden laatuun muutoin saattaa loukata yleistä tai toisen yksityistä etua (pohjaveden pilaamiskielto).

The environmental protection of Janakkala supervises in permit procedures and notification procedures, as well as in other actions, to ensure that groundwater contamination is not caused. The latest protection plan for the groundwater areas in Janakkala was created on May 20, 2014. The groundwater area protection plan aims to ensure the preservation of groundwater resources in usable conditions without unnecessarily restricting other land use forms in groundwater areas. The protection plan includes risk assessments and proposed actions.
