Preparation
The municipality of Janakkala is prepared to ensure essential services for residents even in emergency situations and exceptional circumstances. Issues may arise from, among other things, the following:
- Exceptional weather conditions such as storms
- Extensive power supply disruptions
- Widespread information system failures
- Severe disruptions in water supply systems
- Major accidents in traffic
- Significant emissions of hazardous substances
The aforementioned situations are referred to as normal-time emergency situations. Even more serious are so-called exceptional circumstances, which refer to situations where the vital functions of society are endangered or threatened to be endangered to the extent that normal legislation is insufficient to ensure them. Exceptional circumstances are defined in the Emergency Act, whose provisions can be applied as needed. Examples of exceptional circumstances may include war or the threat of war, international crises, and major accidents that have serious effects on citizens or our country.
Self-preparedness
Self-preparedness (Rescue Act 379/2011 §14) refers to the readiness of an individual, community, business, or institution for situations where normal daily life is disrupted.
It is good to consider in advance, for example:
- What kind of hazardous situations might occur in one’s own home?
- How could hazardous situations be prevented?
- How to evacuate the home in case of a fire?
- Do I know how to administer first aid if necessary?
- How to heat the house during a long power outage?
72 hours is a preparedness recommendation for households created by authorities and organizations.
